JERSEY CATTLE BREEDERS.

MANAWATU CLUB. officers!elected. Mr J. A. Russell was in the chair at the annual meeting of the Manawatu Jersey Cattle Breeders’ Club yesterday. In moving the adoption of the report, the chairman said the year had not been such a successful one, from a financial point of view, as last year. The lack of labour on farms and the shortage of petrol bad seriously curtailed the club’s activities. He was in favour of the club’s funds being used to further the interests of the breed. The Oaks competition did not receive the support it warranted, but unless they had the right kind of animal it was of no use entering the competition. It was pleasing to know that the judging competitions were still finding favour. Mr Russell congratulated the secretary upon his excellent work. On the motion of Mr H. J. Lancaster (Glen Oroua) the report was adopted. Air C. G. C. Dormer said that both Mr ltu6sell and Air E. G. Dobson (secretary) had done excellent work for the club. He was of the opinion that they should “clip their wings” a little and obviate the necessity of having to touch the reserve fund. The election of officers resulted : President, Air Russell"; vice-presidents, Messrs C. T, Chisholm, C. AV. Davison, G. W. A. Osborne; executive, Messrs Dernier, D. Bockett, F. C. and D. Ross, H. J. Lancaster, S. Alai, E. Sinclair, A. Alnntgomerie, J. T. Hill, J. O’Donnell, 0. Larsen. T. Radford, B. 13. Bockett, H. Bowen, AV. G. Shannon, AV. V. Shannon, M. Short, and A. Dermer; delegates to the Manawatu sales executive, Alessrs Russell, Dernier and AV. G. Shannon.

The secretary was granted an honorarium of £2l.

Air J. Hill-Motion. AI.R.C.V.S., was elected an honorary member of the club. The annual report stated, inter aha : —“The financial position is very satisfaciory, although a slight loss was made during the year. Generous donations to the prize funds of the Feeding and Manawatu A. and P. Associations are the main items contributing to this loss. The accumulated fund now stands at £TI6 7s Id. Entries, for the seventh Jersey' Oaks competition, which will be completed at the 1941 Feilding Autumn Show, have been rather disappointing, but the committee confidently trusts that future competitions will be more strongly supported. Both, the single cow judging and the female teams judging competitions again proved very r popular, and Alessrs Chisholm Bros.’ shield for the latter competition was won by a team, from the Palmerston North Boys’ High School. To the members of this team the club offers its congratulations. The committee is very gratified with the continued interest being displayed in these competitions, and feels sure that they are doing much to educate the farmers of to-morrow. Air H. J. Lancaster’s farm at Glen Oroua proved a happy choice for the annual demonstration and field day, and our thanks are due to Mr Lancaster for the very complete arrangements made and for the hospitality shown to visitors.” IMPROVEMENT SCHEME.

The club liad before it the circular (already published) issued by the Zealand Jersey Cattle Breeders’ Association on the question of selective registration and better butterfat bulls. It was proposed that a committee consisting of representatives of either the New Zealand Dairy Breeds’ Federation or the New Zealand Association, together with representatives of the Dairy Division and the Herd Becoming Council, be set up to deal with any matters that may arise in bringing this scheme into operation. Messrs Dermer. and G. Dawick went into detail to explain the scheme s advantages to the members. Mr Dermei said, that group herd tests were not accepted for stud pul poses. The Government had said that the farmer did not breed enough bulls in comparison with the number of heifers raised. “Many people do not know how to select a bull for breeding. .Many go by the appeal - ance, but I consider the pedigree of the beast is most important, concluded Mr Dermer. . After further discussion and a number of questions had been answered Mr ltussell proposed that the club express itself as being in favour of the principle of the scheme, and the motion was carried, there being only one dissentient. The members congratulated .Messrs Dawick and Dermer upon the manner in which they had put forward the scheme.
