ALCANTARA BATTLE.

DOMINION REPRESENTED. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 5. AYith the light between the British auxiliary cruiser Alcantara, and a German raider in the South Atlantic, a young Christchurch man has now been in his second naval engagement with the enemy. He is Russell Isherwood, aged 22, second son of Air and Airs F. G. R. Isherwood, Sumner,-who lias been at sea.for the past five years. Isherwood had a lucky escape in his first contact with the 'enemy last Alarch. Ho was on the engine-room 6taff of the motor' vessel Cederbank when she was torpedoed in enemy action off the Norwegian coast. The fact that he is a good swimmer probably saved his life. To quote his last letter to his parents, he says; “We had a narrow escape, those of us who did get saved; and was the water cold? AVe were in it for an hour and a-half swimming around. AA’e were off the Norwegian coast.” Following this action, his father, received official notification that his son had been landed uninjured at a United Kingdom port. It was apparently after this that he joined the crow of the Alcantara as a member of the. engine-room staff. ALCANTARA AT SEA. CHILEAN SHIP LOST. Received August 6, 9.15 a. ill. RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 5. H.M.S. Alcantara has sailed after effecting repairs following her clash with the German raider in the South Atlantic. A Valparaiso message says the Chilean steamer Aloraleda has been sunk north of Faraway Island, in the Straits of Magellan.' Sixty-six were drowned and 33 saved.
