Archbishop Averill is visiting the Marton and Wanganui districts in order to conduct confirmation services in the place of the Bishop of Wellington. who is ill.

Mr F. Honore, who for .the past three and a half years has been residing in Sydney, is at present visiting Palmerston North and is staying with his parents, Mr and Mrs W. j. Honore, of Fitzroy Street.

Mr R. E. McGregor, manager of tho Bank of New South Wales in Gore, lias received advice of his transfer to Waverley, Taranaki. Mr C. C. Hall, manager at Edendale, has been appointed to replace Mr McGregor. Tho Prime Minister (Rt. Hon. P. Fraser), who lias been confined to his homo in Northland for the last few days with a severe attack of influenza, is now improving rapidly, and hoped to resume his official duties at Parliament Buildings to-day. Very Rev. G. H. McNeur, formerly principal of the United Missionary College, Canton, who has spent more than 40 years in China, and has also held the office of Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand, was the speaker at the weekly luncheon of tho Palmerston North Rotary Club to-day. He gave an address on present-day conditions in China. Mr R, A. Dickel, M.A., headmaster of the Iteefton District High School, has been appointed an inspector of schools. Mr Dickel was educated at thcJVfussel burgh School and the Otago Boys’ High School, and graduated M.A. at Otago University. Before taking up his appointment at Reefton, he was first assistant at Marlborough College. ■" The deatli occurred on Saturday of Mr John Robinson, secretary of the Otago Trades and Labour Council, and one of the outstanding advucates for the workers in New Zealand, states a Dunedin Press Association message. Mr Robinson, lyho was one of the stalwarts of the Labour movement in Dunedin, recently argued the workers’ case in the Court of Arbitration for a general order increasing the rates of wages in industry in the Dominion.

A well-known Hastings business man and bowler, Mr Charles Newton, died recently suddenly in the Napier Hospital. Mr Newton was born in Tamworth, England, in 1865, and came to- New Zealand 40 years ago After a period in Auckland and Dannevirbe, lie went to Hastings 23 years ago. He began to practise as an accountant on his own account in 1926. He was ar. enthusiastic bowler as a member of the Heretaunga Club.
