VICTORIAN DROUGHT.

WHEAT AREAS SUFFER. MELBOURNE, Aug. 4. The long spell of dry weather in the Victorian wheat areas has had a devastating effect on the crops. The Premier* (Mr Dunstan) on his return from a tour of inspection, said only a miracle can give Victoria a reasonable crop. “The prospects arc very blue,” said Mr Dunstan. “I have not seen a really promising crop. They are just coming up in patches and those patches look miserable. The big area prepared for late cropping is unlikely to be planted at all.” The dry weather was also likely to affect the lamb export and wool clip. Early lambs were stunted and might have to be carried as stores, Mr Dunstan added.
