COURAGEOUS KING.
BIRTHDAY- OBSERVED. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, Aug. 3. Broadcasting from London on the occasion of the sixty-eighth birthday of King Haakon, the Norwegian Prime Minister (M. Nygaardsvold) referred to King Haakon’s effort to keep his country out of the war. “But, unfortunately, our wishes and our will to neutrality were disregarded,” he said. “A foreign people who for years has been brought up to regard war and aggresison against hopeaceful neighbours as the highest and most noble form of moral- expression took our country by force of arms. In these difficult days for our people the King has shown that oven in times of adversity he holds fast to his motto, ‘Everything for Norway.” He has set no store by his own person by the goods of his house. For him Norway’s freedom and independence are the only things that matter. Tic has reiused to contribute to the legislation of murder. plunder and slavery.” M. Nygaardsvold concluded by offering King Haakon the heartfelt thanks of his people and expressing the wish that liis goal of peace might soon be achieved. From Gothcnhurg (Sweden) it is stated that the Norwegian Administrative Council has issued a proclamation forbidding the flying of flags for King Haakon’s birthday to-day.
