Another enjoyable bridge party was given on Thursday in aid of the Sick, Wounded and Distress Fund, by Mesdames R. Harker and E. F. Bee, at the home of the former in Langston Avenue. The s.um of £2 was raised. Mrs Fairbrother won the prize. A novel method of raising patriotic funds was used in Whakatane, when 130 prominent ' women of the town pushed gaily-decorated wheelbarrows for half a mile through the streets. Each barrow was loaded with goods. 90 per cent, of which had been donated by the business men of the town, and these included groceries, hardware, vegetables, articles of clothing, fowls, sheep and pigs. Keen bidding was experienced at the subsequent auction sale and £42 was raised.
