HITLER’S DOWNFALL. TROUBLES OF GERMANY. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 1. The frightful conditions ruling in Germany, and the view that the German nation would collapse before long, are revealed in a letter from England to a friend in New' Zealand. The letter states: “It is to be hoped that the day of peace is not far distant.’ I met a chap from Germany recently, and he said conditions there were frightful. He only had one shirt and two pairs of socks in twelve months. Wages were only a pittance. Furniture was put out in the street if the rent was not paid, and if it lay there over an hour then the authorities came and confiscated it. Every person had to work to the limit. “Hitler promised the people everything to secure their support to get into power, and, once in, he put the Gestapo over the people and ruled with the iron hand, giving the people absolutely nothing. “Collapse of the German nation must come before long. Hitler will bring ruin and starvation to all countries he occupies. It will be like an army of locusts passing over fields, eating out everything as they go. The retreat of the German armv from occupied areas will be a repetition of Napoleon’s retreat from Moscow-. This may come much quicker than we expect. Britain knows all about the internal troubles of Germany.”
