SUMMER SPORTS

TERRACE END CLUB. ELECTION OE OFFICERS. Mr P. E. Childs was in the chair at the annual meeting of the Terrace End Bowling, Tennis and Croquet Club, last evening. There was a fair attendance of members. The chairman referred to the death of Mr A. Baldwin and stated that he had been a member of the club for 15 years. Those present stood in silence as a mark of respect to Mr Baldwin’s memory. In moving the adoption of the report, the president said that the committee had a small credit balance on the year’s working. The greens looked ia credit to the club, this being due to the untiring efforts of a number of members.

Mr J. Davidson congratulated the president and the committee on the way they had conducted the affairs of the club. The auditor (Mr J. J. O’Shea) explained numerous items in the balancesheet. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The election of officers resulted:- — President, Mr W. R. Kells; vice-pre-sidents, Messrs E. Bee, C. A. P. Dixon and J. Davidson; committee, Messrs C. Claughton, J. Handley, U. W. Melville, E. Anderson, E. Bringezu, W. Howe and H. J. King; treasurer, Mr G. W. Mills; green superintendent, Mr J. J. O’Shea; auditor, Mr O’Shea. Mr P. D. Wills proposed that a ladies’ bowling section of the club be formed. Mr Dixon asked how many ladies would join the club if this were done. Mr Mills said that wherever there were lady bowlers they were an asset to the club. He was not in favour of going to the expense of laying down a new green if a sufficient number of lady players did not come forward, however. He mentioned that the same question would be discussed by the Takaro club at its meeting. Mr Anderson: It would be foolish to open the club to one or two lady players, but if a large number came forward then they could have their own green. I am opposed to a mixed club. Messrs Claughton, Wills and the president were opposed to the ladies p aying with the men. Mr Kells: We must mind our finances, and not make any false moves. Mr O’Shea said that in California there , were a large number of lady players, and many were outstanding at the game. To lay down a new green would take about £IOO, and it would be at least two years belore it was ready for play. He was opposed to having just a few lady players; there must be at least 20. After further discussion the motion was lost on a show of hands. A motion of sympathy with Mr F. Knowles in his illness was passed. Those who bad helped the club dtiring the season were accorded thanks. & lir>-17T1?UT r\t? \ f ■*rW7T r rr U'-CS

The annual report, presented by Mr P. E. (Jhilds, the retiring president, stated inter alia:—“The bowling membership was slightly lower than for the previous year. The croquet membership is still small and very dirappointinfi. A lot of work has been done on the greens, particularly by Mr J. J. O’Shea, who has been preparing the greens for the coming season; he ha« 3 been assisted by Mr C. Anderson and a few other members. The greens arc looking very well, and, given reasonably good luck, and clubs should have two very fine greens this season. The greens were used by the Returned Soldiers’ Association and Post and Telegraph Departments for socia games and tournaments. Owing to the bad weather and the international situation, it was difficult to arrange outside visits, but the club experienced a good season. Congratulations are extended to the following competition winners: Singles, J. Hanley; pairs E. Bee and C. Dixon (skip); rinks, Bradley. McLean, Ellis and Anderson (skip).' The club was well represented at the Centre New Year pairs and Easter tournaments, two of our pairs getting into the post-section play at New year and some of our rinks getting well up at Easter. We were also represented at the \\ cllington and Napier Centre visits. Thanks were expressed to all who had assisted the C, Th 0 balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £6 Ids sd. __
