UPPER HOUSE.
PENSIONS BILL PASSED. APPRECIATION OF R.S.A. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Aug. 1. The Legislative Council met at 2.30 p.m., and received the Rural Housing Amendment Bill, the Appropriation Bill and the Greymoutli Harbour Board Loan Bill .from the House of Representatives. The last-named was referred to the Local Bills Committee and the other two measures, along with the "War Pensions Amendment Bill and the War Pensions Extension Bill, were put through all stages and passed. During the second reading debate on the Pensions Bills, which were taken together, Ho.n. V. A. Ward expressed regret that Hon. W. Perry, who is president of the Returned Soldiers Association, was absent because of illness. Mr Ward, as a returned soldier, could say that the association was well satisfied with the Bilis, and the executive of the association wished to express appreciation of the way in which they were consulted by the Government before the Bills were brought down.
Other speakers also expressed appreciation of the Bilis, and in replying the Leader of the Council (Hon. D. AVilson) said that if there was any criticism of the measures he considered they were all answered by the reception given to the Bills by the returned soldiers of New Zealand.
Before the Council adjourned at 4.10 p.m. Mr Wilson moved that the adjournment should he until Tuesday, August 27, but advised Councillors that it was possible, though not probable, that they would be called back before then.
