HOCKEY.
In a fast struggle, the Manawatu. hockey team beat Wellington by 3 goals to 1 at the Showgrounds yesterday. The teams were .-Wellington. Marshall, Perrin, Adams,’:Whitham, McLean, Mulherou, Adams, Kelly, Searle, Wellum, Neale. Manawatn. C Hart, Harris, Byers,' Smith, Davey, Johnson, Botting, La wry, Fetch, Beales, Donaldson. • • - ‘ * - Manawatn attacked from the bullyoff, Petch nearly goaling. The home side kept,, up the pressure and Lawry netted after Petch had centred the ball to him. The home side nearly scored again from a quick long corner hit by Dotting. Through being too slow in the Wellington's side’s circle, Manawatu lost another opportunity to add to their scojc. The visiting forwards went away in a rush which transferred play to the other end of the field, but a long hit by Byers sent them back. Hart soon afterwards was called upon to clear when Wellum had a shot at goal. From a melee in front of the Manawatu goal, Kelly netted and evened the scores. The home side renewed their attack and'kept it up till the interval. An infringement in front of their goal cost the visitors dearly when Beales netted from a penalty corner hit, ' and Petch scored another goal for the home side' from a centre. hit by Beales. Play 6ee-sawed for a period, until Botting carried the ball down the line to the circle, where his centre hit wa6 not accepted and the chance was lost. Wellington went to the attack temporarily, only, for Harris to clear with a long hit. However, the visitors stayed on the attack until Hart cleared with a long kick. Wellington tried to further augment their score from a penalty corner hit, but the attempt failed. When the final whistle sounded the score was Manawatu 3, Wellington 1.
