POULTRY SHOW
GOOD STANDARD OF EXHIBITS. COMPLETION OE JUDGING. Judging in the shows conducted by the iVianawatu Poultry and Pigeon Club and the Palmerston North Cage Bird Club in conjunction with the Winter Show was completed yesterday afternoon. At both displays the exhibits were of a good standard, and 'they attracted keen interest. Mr Waiter .Jones t.Ncw Plymouth) commenting on the game and bantam classes, which he judged, said the Old English game divisions were typical ol the Old English fighting stock. 'the winning birds, showed good type, were hard in feather, and ready to hold their own in battle. A black red cock, which won the prize for the best game bird in the Show, was of a particularly good type, and showed the true bone, which was lacking hi many birds to-day. The modern game bantams, although lew ill numbers, showed excellent _ quality, with plenty of reach and having good, hard feather. The rosecomb section produced the best bantam in the Show and this entry, for an adult bird, retained the texture and true type of the rosecomb. Mr D. Stewart (Normanhy) was the judge of all the utility classes, the ducks, Bliode Island Beds' and Wyandottes, having under his adjudication 190 of the 352 birds in the Show. 11l the utility classes, he said, although the entries were not as numerous as at previous Shows at this centre, the birds throughout were quite up to the high standards usually seen at Palmerston North, which was saying a good deal. The White Leghorns were a strong class right through. The Brown Leghorns brought forward some fine birds and one, entered by A. E. Adams (Marion) took the award for the best Leghorn. This was the, finest Leghorn the speaker had seen exhibited at Palmerston North, and it won a similar award at Wanganui last week. The Black Orpingtons, as usual at Palmerston North, were strong in quality. The best bird in this division was a cockerel and was a typical example nf the breed. The Rhode Island Reds, in both the utility and fancy, sections, were particularly strong by comparison with other classes in the Show, and. the Wyandottes showed high quality. The Black Minorcns were fairly strong. Ducks were quite up to the usual standard for this Show.
Mr T. B. Holdaway (Palmerston North), the -judge of the fancy birds other than Wyandottcs and Rhode Island Reds, commented that the classes were good in quality, although small in numbers. The winning Black Minorca hen took the championship for the- best bird in this section and the winning White Leghorn hen won a rose bowl awarded for the light breeds.
