ADOPTION OF CHILDREN

25,000 FROM BRITAIN. NAPIER MAYOR’S PROPOSAL. A proposal that an offer be made to extend hospitality to, and if necessary to adopt permanently, 25,000 British children in New Zealand has been made by the Mayor of Napier (Mr T. W. Hercock). His suggestion, which will be placed before Parliament when it opens to-morrow-, was received in a telegram to-day by the Mayor of Palmerston North (Mr A: E. Mansford). The telegram from Mr Hercock is as follows:—“I am asking the Mayors of 50 principal' towns if they will join me in petitioning Government to offer hospitality, and if necessary permanent adoption in individual homes, to 25,000 British children as soon as can bo arranged. If willing to take a proportion in your district wire me urgently to-day. Presenting petition to Parliament to-morrow. Assistance rendered in earthquake evacuation our reason for taking the initiative.” Mr Mansford has replied as follows: —“I have no authority to commit the citizens, but feel sure that they will fall into line with what is done by other cities.”
