FEDERAL LOANS.

SYDNEY, May 28. The Federal Treasurer (Mr P. C. Spender) expresses 'gratification at the response to the Federal loans announced yesterday. The Bank of New Soiith Wales has applied for £1,000,000 in the £20,000,000 issue, which makes £4,500,000 this bank has subscribed to loans since the outbreak of the war. Other large amounts came from insurance and shipping companies.- A wellknown Sydney family lias contributed £BOO,OOO as an interest-free loan. Relatively smaller sums have come from other citizens, . while free gifts of £IO.OOO, £7500 and £IOOO respectively came from private persons.
