CHARGES OF ASSAULT.
MAORI IN COURT. ‘You will have to go to gaol for this; u e cannot allow this in the city.” said Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, when Charles Shelford, a Maori soldier, pleaded guilty to three charges, of assaulting a young woman and two men, on April 21. Detective-Sergeant A. B. Meiklejohn said that on Sunday evening accused caught hold ot the young woman’s hand when slie was walking in Ferguson Street and would , not let go. Accused assaulted the two men, Mr A. H. Cosslett and Pastor G. Stirling •ii 2. third) when they remonstrated with him. The conduct of the Maoris had been very good, Mr Meiklejohn added. Last week-end. however, they had been given general leave and this incident had happened then. For the assault on the young woman accused was sentenced to two months’ gaol, and oil eaeli of the others to a month’s imprisonment, the sentences to be concurrent.
