(From Our Own Correspondent.) ASHIIURST, April 24 The householders’ meeting was fairly well attended. The chair was occupied by Mr J. Sumner whose report on the two years’ woi •k slated that the capitation grant had been considerably reduced. W ork in and around the school had progressed favourably and the tone of the .school was excellent. The roll had fluctuated, thcic being 108 pupils iu April, 1938, 111 in December, 97 in February, 1939, and 112 in December, while the present roll stood at 105. Splendid support was given the dental clinic, 60 pupils being on the roll. Good support was given the schools saving bank, the amount invested being £32 Is 4d, from 31 depositors. The Calf Club had a certain amount of support, but much more could be achieved if parents would create the incentive for their children to compete in tlio wonderful educational competition. Swimming instruction had been carried out with marked success. In 1939, 26 awards were gained, five being lor life-saving. Maintenance of the school grounds had received attention and various improvements made by the committee, playing lawns and an extra concrete path being decided improvements for the children. Once again the environment certificate had been endorsed. Thanks were extended t,o the head teacher and bis staff for their courtesy and eo-oporalion with the committee; to the committee for their consideration; to Mr R. D. Davis (secretary), and to the parents and others who had assisted the school in the two .years. The financial statement showed receipts to February, 1939, £136 5s Id and expenses £93 17s 6d. leaving a credit balance of £42 7s 7d. The position of February 29, 1940, was receipts £llß 2s, expenses £lOl 14s Bd, leaving a credit balance of £l6 7s 4d. Mr \V. N. Brewer congratulated the chairman and retiring committee on the two years’ work, and commended the improvements made to the school’s environments. ’1 lie following were elected: Messrs R, Davis, It. A. Jones. E. Tunnecliffc, J. B. Searle, 11. llyndman, F. A. Dunstall, and J. A. MeDonell. A hearty vole of thanks was accorded the retiring chairman (Mr J. 11. Sumner) who did not seek re-election. Mr Murphy proposed that an event be held to create greater interest ill the Calf Club effort. A further recommendation proposed by Mr W. N. Brewer was that the committee consider holding a children’s school concert in place of the annual fancy dress ball. At a meeting of tbc committee, Mr Dunstall v. as elected chairman and Mr Davis, secretary. Trustees of the Bank of New Zealand arc Messrs Dunstall Davis. The delegates to the School Committees’ Association arc Messrs Davis and Tunnecliffc. It was decided that there be no school fancy dress ball this year, but that a concert be held. The headmaster reported that the boys bad decided to play Association football this year in lieu of Rugby, ns it is much easier to get a team of If: it was intended to compete in the competitions in Palmerston North. Mr C. llurcomb lias signified his willingness to coach the boys.
