FIRE BOARD. The annual report of the AA oodville Fire Board’s superintendent (Air 11N. AlcNcil) states that during the past year the 'brigade received one call, which was to a wash-house fire in Grey Street. The average attendance at musters was 90 per cent. Particulars arc given of the board’s plant, all of which is stated to be in good order. The strength of the brigade is two officers and eleven men. The report covering the quarter ended March 31, 1940, states that six practices were held, with good attendances. The majority of the (ire plugs have been inspected and are in good order. Air J. AValkcr lias been elected a member, of the brigade. The resignation of Fireman J. Beale was received on March 4 owing to his removal front the district; that of Fireman C. Smith had also been received. Owing to there being no single men available, Firemen J. Charles and Airs Charles had offered to occupy the sleeping quarters at the fire station where they had now taken up residence. PERSONAL. The friends of Airs John Elder, formerly Alayoress of Woodville, will he pleased to learn that she is now convalescing after a severe illness in the Wellington Hospital. Airs AA’. 11. Nelson, of “Lauriston,” AA'oodville, is visiting Wellington. Airs S. Smith, of To Kuiti, is visiting her parents, Air and Airs Dunstall, of Mastcrton Road, Woodvillc, GOLF. The medal round played by llio AA'oodvillo Golf dub during the week-end in conjunction with a four-ball bogey c-ompc-tion resulted in a win for E. llanaray (handicap 36) with a net score of 66. In flic four-ball competition, three pairs tied with 5 up—R. Maurice and K. D. Mackie, R. Paterson and At Baker, and E. I-Janarav and 11. J.agor. .Maurice and Mackie won on a count back. It. Paterson, a seven handicap player, was responsible for an exceptionally good round—three over par for the course —going out in 39 and coining home in 38. He lias been playing consistently good golf since the season opened and bis handicap lias accordingly been reduced to five.
