MAKINO.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) MAKINO, April 23.
The first, of the series of euchres was inaugurated in the Makino Hall with a record attendance. The hall presented a gay scene. Mr AA T . D. R. Baker, chairman of the Tlall Committee, welcomed all present, especially those who had travelled from afar. The winners were Miss B. Thurston and Mr N. Vincent, while the scaled prizes went to Miss V. Lang and Mr R. Hill. Mr and Mrs AV. E. Baker had kindly donated (be trophies. Supper was served by the ladies, during which Mr AV. D. R. Baker presented Miss J. Thurston, in view of her approaching marriage, with a handsome tea waggon, 'Ho asked her to accept this gift as a token from the committee, of which JMiss Thurston was the secretary. Miss Thurston thanked all associated with the gift and added that anything she had dene had been witli the greatest of pleasure. The hall presented a bright scene on Saturday evening, the function being a kitchen tea evening for Mies J. Thurston and Mr C. Tainter. There was a large attendance and with danc-ing and competitions the evening was voted a success. The hall had been effectively transformed with flowers and leaves, while bowls were a ranged around the stage. Mrs Vi rig,,, contributed items with the piano-accor-dion. AVinnio Huddlestons presented the sailor’s hornpipe and operatic dance. A Monte -Carlo dance was won by Miss T>. Davies and partner. Mr N. Roberts was M.C. at the- euchre, the winners were Mrs AYilton and Mr Gavigan. Mrs AA E. Baker called upon the young couple to accept the many presents for then* future home. Mr Painter thanked all present. Hie bridesmaids-to-bc (Misses E. Ritchie and L. Gavigan) were called upon to open the presents. Miss Thurston was entertained at a pantry afternoon by Mrs J. Gumming, of Feilding. The drawing-room was bedecked with flowers and autumn tinted leaves. Competitions and singing were enjoyed. The winners of games were Mrs Ilnyden, Miss Fay McAvoy, and Miss Jovco HaVden. The hostesses asked Miss Thurston to accept the many presents for her pantry.
