EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” APRIL 24, 1910. Mark Twain, tbe noted American author and humorist, had died at Redding, California, at the age of 75 years from acute asthma. Since. Christmas it was reported that 14 new branches of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union had been formed in the Auckland Province. There were now 60 branches in that area. An attempt was being made to introduce the little grey owl into the Manawatu district. Mr J. G. Williamson had left Sydney for England to complete with Madame Melba a scheme to produce grand opera in Australia and New Zealand similar to that produced in Covent Garden (London) and the Metropolitan Theatre (New York). Serious rioting had broken out in Honan, stated a report received from the missionaries who had arrived at Peking. Buildings had been burnt and many threats to foreigners were received. !
