OBITUARY.
MR G. N. BARNES. (British Official Wireless.) Received April 23, 10 a.in. RUGBY, April 22. The death has occurred of lit. Hon. G. N. Barnes, who was a signatory of the Treaty of Versailles. Mr Barnes was a member of the Lloyd George Cabinet during the last war. He took a prominent part in the establishment of the International Labour Organisation of the League of Nations with its International Labour Office at Geneva. He was an untiring advocate of an international agreement on a 48-hour working week. ADMIRAL SIR E. GAUNT. , LONDON, April 22. Admiral Sir Ernest Gaunt, who commanded the First Battle Squadron at the Battle of Jutland is dead. Admiral Gaunt, who was born in March, 1865, was a son of Judge Gaunt, of Melbourne. He was educated at the Church of England Grammar School, Melbourne and in 11.M.5. Britannia, and joined the Navy in 1878. Ho was first Commissioner for Wei-hai-wci and Administrator of Liu-kung-tao from 1898 to 1899. lie received the thanks of the. Austrian and German commanders-in-chief for his services during tiie Boxer outbreak, and also received Hie thanks of the Italian Chamber of Deputies for liis work at Durbo, .Somaliland, in Dcceinhcr, 1903, when as .commander of a landing party from 11.M.5. Mohawk lit avenged the deatli of Lieutenant Grabati. of tlie Italian navy. Later lie commanded the battleships Queen, Majestic, and, Superb. lie was promoted rear-admiral in 1914. From 1917 fo 1919 lie was Coinnmn-dor-in-Chicf in the East Indies, and in 1921-22 Commandcr-in-Chief of the Western Approaches. He was promoted Admiral in 1924 and was placed on the retired list the following year.
