EARTH TREMOR.
CITY’S EXPERIENCE. Some minor damage, mainly to stocks in shops, is reported as a result of an earthquake experienced in Palmerston North shortly alter 6.30 last evening. The shock was sufficiently strong to cause some alarm, particularly in the business area. The tremor was preceded by a loud rumbling. There was a preliminary tremor, which died way, to be replaced by a longer shake, with an upward jolt which ended in a swaying movement. Several shops suffered by having window displays upset and articles broken, but damage was by no means general, and most premises escaped. The stock in one window in Cuba Street was upset and the resultant damage, arising from breakages, amounted to about £2. Articles in another window, in Broadway, and in the shop were dislodged by the main jolt of the earthquake, and the damage caused is estimated to be between £2 and £3. Several clocks were stopped by the tremor. The tremor was also felt in Wellington, Wanganui, Feilding, Hawke's Bay, Woodville and Pahiatun. the centre possibly being located in the Danncvirke district.
