JOCKEYS IN UNIFORM.
WARTIME GRAND NATIONAL, LONDON, April 8. Held in a realistic wartime atmosphere, with aeroplanes patrolling overhead, the great Grand National race was one of the most exciting' ever run at Ain tree. It was the war’s lirst big race, and probably the last. A largo percentage of the punters, owners, trainers and jockeys arrived in uniform. The winning jockey, “Ala” Jones, is an R.A.F. sergeant. _ Many private parties had batmen's services and the centre of the course was ploughed up and planted with vegetables. Australian airmen on leave were thrilled by the race, but found the conditions primiltive compared with the accommodation on Australian courses. | One R.A.A.F. officer said: “Bucher’s Brook is a great jump, but not as terrifying as i.' looks in pictures. Still, f would prefer lo meet half a dozen Heiukcls.”
