Mr Andrew Fisher had been appointed Premier of Australia, and was the second Labour holder of that office. The rioting and banditry which persisted in China had led to the destruction of much foreign property and the endangering of the lives of missionaries. Four balloonists had been killed in an explosion of their craft, caused by lightning, over Germany.
