Although Pritchard was not bowling at. his usual standard, he gathered 6 wickets for 23 runs, and Downes took the other four at a cost of 26. An early rot set in among the Bay of Plenty batsmen, and two partnerships, one of 26 and the other of 27, failed to stem the tide of the fast bowling. At the closing stages the principal interest lay in whether the last wicket would fan before lunch or not. With only one run scored, Spring l did not attempt to play Downes’s ; second ball of the day, and it swung jin two feet from the leg side and j skittled the wicket. Baylcy was clean j howled by Pritchard with 14 runs in the book and Andrews and D. J. Ewart wore batting with 20 runs up 65 minutes after the start.
