EASTER IN ENGLAND
EFFECTS OF AVARTIME. Received March 25. 10.55 a.m. LONDON, March 24. The Easter exodus from London continued resulting in the two main lines serving mainly the southern and western areas breaking the previous Easter traffic records. Road traffic continued below normal. The increased railway traffic is attributed to people entraining who otherwise would have used cars. LONDON, March 23. An unexpected feature of the first wartime Easter has been the exceptionally heavy rail traffic, which to yesterday on all main lines was up to and in some cases exceeded normal Easter passenger standards. The booking from London constituted a record for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway. The receipts as a whole are twice those of Easter, 1938. Motor traffic is inevitably smaller, because of the petrol rationing. A great increase in the number of pedalcyclists is recorded. Because of the war, Britons are for the- most part spending their holidays in their own country, though some British officers on short leave have arranged to meet their wives in Paris. Every train from Paris is fully booked with holiday-makers going to see their children in the country. Easter weddings have been more numerous than usual in England this year. In London registrars worked overtime, and in Southampton there was an average of six weddings an hour for more than five hours at the registry office there.
