DAIRY FACTORY AWARD

TERMS ANNOUNCED. A new award for dairy factories and related trades in the Northern, '1 aranaki, Wellington, Marlborough, Nelson, Westland, Canterbury, Otago and Southland industrial districts Inis been issued by Mr J. A. Gilmour, S.M., delegate of the Court of Arbitration. The award applies to butter-factories, cheese-factories, creameries, packing-houses, milk-powder factories, condensed milk factories, creambulking depots, casein creameries, easeindrying factories, and cheese-curing stations. “With the exception of minor alterations agreed on by the parties at the hearing, the award embodies the recommendations arrived at by the assessors in Conciliation Council,” the Magistrate said in a memorandum. “While the Court’s power to make an award retrospective is restricted by the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act, the parties desire it to be recorded that they agreed that the whole award should come mto operation from July 1, 1939.” , , Hours of work in the different classes of factories were fixed a*s follow: Butter factories. —48-hour week for 17 weeks, 44-hour week for 13 weeks, 40hour week for 22 weeks. Cheese factories: 52-hour week for 22 weeks, 44-hour week for 17 weeks. 38-hour week for 13 weeks. In packing houses where manufacturing is not done, 40 hours a week. Milk-powder factories: 48-hour week for 17 weeks, 44hour week for 13 weeks. 40-hour week for 22 weeks. Condensed milk factories: 48hour week for 17 weeks, 44-hour week for 13 weeks, 40-hour week for 22 weeks. Cream bulking depots: 48-hour week for 17 weeks. 44-hour week for 13 weeks, 40hour week for 22 weeks. Casein creameries: 52-hour week for 22 weeks, 44-hour week for 17 weeks, 33-hour week for 13 weeks. Creameries: 48-hour week for 1: weeks, 44-hour week for 13 weeks, 40hour week for 22 weeks. Minimum rates of wages for all omployees covered by the award were fixed by'the Court. The following is the weekly scale for a butter factory where a manager and 15 bands or moro are cmploved: First assistants, £5 14s; second assistant, £5 7s 6d; third assistant, £4 19s 6d : fourth assistant, £4 15s 6d; all other workers, £4 10s. All work done outside or m excess of the hours prescribed shall be paid for at the rate of time and a-half for the first four hours and double-time thereafter. In the event of a breakdown of machinery or any similar emergency happening in connection with the work of any factory, the weekly hours mav be exceeded up to five hours' a week in 'a cheese factory and four hours a week in any other factory. The excess hours shall not be regarded as overtime, but shall'be paid for at ordinary rates with a minimum of 2s an horn.
