IN THE CHURCHES.

GOOD FRIDAY SERVICES. The Palmerston North Ministers’ Association held combined church services at St. Paul’s Methodist Church, Broadway, and the Baptist Church, on Good Friday. At St. Paul’s Rev. Clarence Eaton presided and Rev. R. Warnock of St. David’s Presbyterian Church, gave an address on different aspects of the Cross as viewed by witnesses of the tragedy. Prayer was offered by Rev. W. M. Garner, of the Congregational Church, and a Communion service, in which the three ministers participated, was held. A large number of the congregation joined in Communion, and hymns suitable to Good Friday were sung. At the Baptist Church Rev. A. Blakcmore, of the Cuba Street Methodist Church, presided and Rev. J. C. Macky, of the Baptist Church, was the preactier. Miss N. Kendon, of Auckland, gave a solo. At All Saints’ Church services commenced at 3 a.m. with the Litany. Matins followed at 10 o’clock, when Rev. D. V. de Candolo gave a sermon on “The Early Morning of Good Friday.” The Three Hours’ Devotion from noon to 3 p.m. was conducted by Rev. C. F. Webster, of Mangaweka. The usual Evensong took place at five o’clock and at 7.30 Rev. de Candole conducted the meditation “At the Foot of the Cross.” The Three Hours’ Devotional Service was also held at St. Peter’s Church, Terrace End, Rev. F. S. Ramson conducting this. The Mass of the Pre-Sanetified was celebrated by Rt. Rev. Monsignor J. F. MacMunus at St. Patrick’s Church in the morning, and Rev. Father P. J. Herlihy preached on “The Passion.” In the afternoon and evening the devotions of the Stations of the Cross were held. At the Evangelical Lutheran Church Divine service and Holy Communion were held in the morning, those who had been confirmed on Palm Sunday making their first Communion. Rev. A. Christensen conducted the service and gave an address on “The Crucifixion.” stressing the importance of sacrifice. SALVATION ARMY. At the Salvation Army Citadel, the services were conducted by Major and Mrs Dick, assisted by Captains L. Lindsay and L. Rundle, who each gave a short address, the theme taking in the expressions of “A Day at the Cross.” There were three services during the day. that in the afternoon being a special service of song, entitled “Messiahsliip,” arranged for the visiting choir of the Auckland Congress Hall by one of its members, Mr J. Salthouse. On Saturday the visitors were taken on a bus tour of the city and in the afternoon Mr J. Holmes Runnicles, L.R.S.M., organist and choirmaster of All Saints’ Church, conducted a lecture practice for the combined Palmerston North and Auckland choirs. The Palmerston North senior and junior choirs entertained the visitors to tea and in the evening the combined choirs presented a partnership programme under the conductorship of Mr Runnicies. On Sunday morning they sang Jude’s “Consecration” as arranged by Mr A. Tregurtha, choirmaster of St. Paul’s Methodist Church, and in the afternoon Mr Runnicles conducted three songster brigades. At 7 p.m. the' massed choirs were heard in “Behold the Gate,” and Major E. Thorne, who was stationed at Palmerston North some years ago, conducted the service. To-day the visiting choir were entertained at the Esplanade, and will leave for Auckland this evening.
