THIRTY YEARS AGO.
EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD,” MARCH 23, 1910. Oxford had beaten Cambridge in the University boat race. An elaborate plot to simultaneously murder all the missionaries in German New Guinea had been discovered. The cause of friction appeared to be that the missionaries were against the practice of polygamy, which was favoured by the natives. Eight natives had been arrested. It was reported from Rome that Mt. Etna was in eruption, discharging lava and red-hot stones. Frequent earth tremors were being experienced in Cataria and Messina. A poll had been taken in Napier on the Harbour Board’s proposal to borrow £300,000 for the completion of i the breakwater harbour. Through a three-fifths majority being required, the proposal was lost. Prizes amounting to £1250 were to be awarded to architects, builders and town planners for the best scheme to prevent the overcrowding of Berlin till the year 2000, when the population was expected to reach ten millions.
