SHIPPING THROUGH FOXTON
BUUER-BOX TIMBER. ASSISTANCE SO UGHT. The desirability of having white pine timber tor butter boxes shipped through Foxton was discussed at a meeting of the Manawatu and West Coast Dairy Companies’ Association, LO-day, when the Foxton Harbour Board wrote asking the association to request tlie State Forest Service to send all this timber for the Manawatu district through the port. The chairman (Mr S. A. Broadbelt) said that tlie Harbour Board was endeavouring to popularise tlie port. It would not matter if the timber were stuck on the bar for a day or two. . It was explained that the saving by sending tlie timber through Foxton would be Is 9}d per 100 super feet. Correspondence which iiad passed between tlie association and the two other bodies concerned was read. The State Forest Service advised that shipping available to work the port of Foxton was limited, and asked for details of ships willing to work the port. When these were supplied the timber could be sent through loxton. Mliite pine timber way a perishable commodity, and it was essential to know what shipping was available, and when and where it was required to shift tlie timber. The Harbour Board, in reply to the information sought about shipping, bail said that not. all vessels were prepared to run to Foxton, but the owners of tlie motor-vessel Hokitika were prepared to continue the work. Tlie association decided to do all it could to assist the Harbour Board.
