WOOLLEN CLOTHING.
GOVERNMENT LEAD SOUGHT. LONDON, March 17. In the House of Commons the Government was requested to give a lead to retailers of clothing materials. Because the whole emphasis of women’s fashions was being placed on wool, retailers were organising a wool week. The Minister of Supply (Dr. E. L. Burgin) said the restriction of the homo demand was constantly under consideration, but different issues were raised for different trades, lie did not doubt that manufacturers and retailers of woollen clothing were aware of the position of supplies and were adjusting their programmes accordingly. Miss Ellen Wilkinson (Labour) suggested it was impossible drastically to curtail luxury expenditures unless the Government gave a clear lead. Dr. Burgin said: “My responsibility for raw wool is not the use of it after it has left the Controller’s hands. About half the requirements of the home trade are met. 1 should have thought this was a drastic cut in luxury expenditure. If a further cut were necessary I should unhesitatingly make it.”
