STRONGER THAN EVER
FINLAND’S DEFENCES. RUSSIANS FORCED TO RETIRE. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) HELSINKI, Feb. 20. The only effect of the Russian pressure seems to have' been to consolidate tlie Finnish defences to such an .extent that the attacks rebounded and the invaders have been flung back to their original positions from Lake Ladoga to the White Sea. A Finnish communique states: “We held up the Russian advance across the ice-clad Suvanto Lake on the east flank of the Mannerheirn Line and forced withdrawal after heavy casualties. “Wo repulsed a full-dress attack at Taibela and repulsed counter-attacks and took strong points at Kuhmo. Wc shot down six ’planes.” FALL OF BJORKO? The Moscow radio claims the capture of tlie city and fortress of Bjorko, guarding the flank of the Mannerheirn Line, and also that the Russians have cleared the Finnish troops from the Bjorko Peninsula and secured much war material. Red ’planes bombed troops and military objectives, and brought down 47 Finnish ’planes.
