CAR STRIKES BRIDGE. MISHAP ON GORGE ROAD. Late yesterday afternoon a small ear travelling towards Palmerston North was slightly damaged when it struck a corner of the Ballanee Bridge. The driver, a visitor to the Manawnto. apparently mistook the turning for the main highway, and, realising Ins mistake attempted to return to the correct’route, but collided with part of the structure. Neither the driver nor his passenger suffered injury. BOISTEROUS WEATHER. rain and hail yesterday. After a spell of fine weather over the holidays, Woodville experienced a i cold snap yesterday. Intermittent : rain continued throughout the afternoon and evening, while a cold wind made outdoor conditions far from pleasant. Williams I and family, of the vicarage, Ross | Street, left Woodville to-day to spend ’a holiday in Auckland. Mrs M. f. j White, of Vogel Street-, left Woodv-jllc 1 to-day for Foxton Beach, where she will spend a holiday. The friends of Mrs F. Burlaee, of Upper McLean Street. Woodville, will learn with regret that she was compelled to enter the Dannevirkc Hospital yesterday. Miss .Joan Reiter, of Petone, lias returned home after having spent the New Year holidays with her parents. Mr and Mrs K. P. R. Rotter, Woodville. Mrs G. L. B. Willans. of Vogel Street, Woodville, accompanied by her son and daughter, Mr F. Willans and - Miss June Willans. is spending a hoii- ! day at Raumati Reach. Miss M. i King, of Waipukurau, was the guest ! of Mrs C. Forbes, Grant Road, during the week-end. ENGAGEMENT. WEBLEY—BETTER. The engagement is announced of Jean, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs Tv. P. B. Retter, of Woodville, to Donald, younger son of Mr and Mrs Harold Webicy, Lower Hutt. BOWLING. PROGRESSIVE PAIRS TOURNEY. A further progressive pairs tournament was p layed on the Woodville Bowling Club’s green yesterday. In spite of boisterous weather in the afternoon, each of the 16 players who participated was able to complete loin games. Competition was keen and the green played well. The winner of the skips’ section was Walker with 4 wins, C. Smith with 2f being second. Play in the leads' section saw W. H. Nelson and E. Bullot tie for first place with 3 wins each. The vital statistics for 1939, made available by the postmaster at 'Woodville (Air H. Id. Little), indicate that, although there were fewer marriages than in the previous year, the birth rate was maintained. The figures for last year, with the 1938 totals in parentheses, are as follow: Births, 47 (47); deaths, 14 (24); marriages. ]9 (25).
