FEILDING’S RAINFALL

YEAR’S TOTAL BELOW AVERAGE. WET WINTER MONTHS. The rainfall in Fcikling during December was slightly above the average lor that month and for the year just closed it was below the average. The records reveal that the rainfall lor the year was variable and the district suffered a very wet winter. Mr E. Mason, of Sancton Road, states that rain fell on eleven days during December for a total of 3.29 inches, compared with the average for that month of 3.02 inches. The heaviest daily iall was on December 11, synchronising with the bad weather in Wellington, when l.OSin. was measured.

The rainfall for the year totalled 33.73 in., compared with the average of 30.92 in. for Feilcling. For the year 1938 a total of 44.95 i». was measured, while in December, 1935, the rainfall totalled 7.11 in. This was a very wot month and was followed bv a particularly dry spell when everything was very scorched. The following details concerning the rainfall for 1939 reveal just how variable conditions were: — ' January .72in. 7 days’ rain February 35in 4 days’ rain March .So in. 6 days’ rain April 4.30 in. • 0 days’ rain Aln.y 74in. 6 days’ rain June 4.68iu. 18 days’ rain July 5.941 n. 18 clays’ rain August 6.70 in. 22 days’ rain September ... 2.42 in. 13 clays’ rain October 221 in. 12 days ram November ... 1.53 in. 11 days’ rain December 3.29 in. 11 days’ rain The sudden dry spell following the particularly wot month of December, 1938, has hot been equalled in the experience of Feilding as far as the iocords arc concerned. Ileal rain did not commence to fall until April 19 and from then and until the end of tile month 4.30 in. were measured. Mat proved dry and then June, July, and August set in very wet with a measurement of over 17in. for the three months. \ feature’of the weather in this period was the fart that the fourth week of June was fine and the first week of August also. Excepting only the sudden dry spell experienced during January. Februarv and March, the records'kept by Air Mason reveal that such a variable ramfall lias been experienced periodically down the years.
