VALUATION CHANGES
MAKERUA ASSESSMENT.
DISSATISFACTION VOICED
Dissatisfaction with the revaluation of properties in its area effected by the Valuation Department was expressed by the Makerua Drainage Board, at. a meeting to-day, uhen statistics were tabled indicative of the alterations made. Members expressed the opinion that there appeared to be inconsistency between the valuations or the Manawatu and Makerua areas, and steps were taken to ascertain it a protest can be lodged along these lines. The clerk (Air N. I. Nielsen), who reported that new rate demands had been sent out following the decision, on objections to the department s adjustments, submitted figures indicative of the reductions effected in valuations. These were as follow: — CLASS A. £ Old valuation 333,380 New valuation 257,440 Reduction <5,940 Percentage reduction 22.7 CLASS B. Old valuation 207,980 New valuation 1/4,006 Reduction 33,930 Percentage reduction 16.3 CLASS C. Old valuation New valuation 1»,04U Reduction 1,120 Percentage reduction 5.7 Air Nielsen added that an estimated rate of £2758 had been made, and following the assessment the actual rate strucii was £2744. . . “I do not know what the position is going to be. Very substantial reductions have been made in the Manawatu area,” remarked the chaiiman (Mr H. Seifert). He had read that the chairman of the Assessment Court had said it would deal with the position of those who had not lodged objections. Possibly the Makerua Board would fall into this category. “It is a question of common justice. I do not know but that we ought to call a special meeting,” added Mr Seifert. . Mr W. Jackson;. Wait till the Alanawatu assessment is finalised. Mr,J. D. Aitchison: The whole thing is that they have admitted it was too high. . Air Seifert: It’s a serious matter. Mr H. Alexander: It is more than a serious matter. How are we going to go on P Mr Jackson moved, and Air Alex 1 - ander seconded, a motion that it bo left in the hands of the chairman, Mr Aitchison and Air Nielsen to ascertain what could be done. Air Jackson added to his motion that a legal opinion be ascertained on the council’s position, and in this form it was carried.
