KIWITEA COUNTY

MEETING OF COUNCIL. The Kiwitea County Council met at Kimbolton yesterday, Cr. L. T. McLean presiding. Also present were: Crs. W. P. Shaw, D. T. Cooper, W. I G. Clapham, A. S. D’Atli, J. H. Williamson, A. E. Shannon, and F. E. Tappin. CORRESPONDENCE. The Valuation Department, advised payment of advance subsidy oil general rates collectable for the year 1939-40, amounting to £lslß 15s. A letter was received Iron! the Public Works Department, advising payment of subsidy on the maintenance of main highways amounting to £IOO2 6s 6d. The district engineer, Public Works Department, wrote approving the acceptance of the following tenders: Construction of Kiwitea Stream bridge and culvert, £2576 15s; construction of culvert and road improvements, Davies’ cutting, £1691. The District Engineer also advised that the Main Highways Board had agreed to provide an additional £1796 (£3 for £1) for flood damage repairs. BANK BALANCES. The finances of the council were reported on and the position of the various accounts given as follows: i County fund account, dr., £4478; employees’ accommodation, special loan account, er., £323; Kimbolton cemetery account, cr., £4; land fund account, No. 2, cr., £148; Rangiwahia cemetery account, cr., £l4; Waituna cemetery account-, cr. £l2. “report on works. The position regarding the payment of rates as at yesterday’s date was given as follows: General rates (1939-40). —Paid, £3176 6s 2d; outstanding, £5007 8s 2d. Special rates (1939-40): Paid, £874 10s 8d; outstanding, £lß2l 19s 9d. Hospital rate (1939-40): Paid, £1650 5s 10d'; outstanding, £2714 3s 9d. Arrears (3 years).—General rates: Paid. £39 18s 9d ; outstanding £l5O 2s 4d. Special rates: Paid, £l2 11s lid; outstanding, £79 7s. Hosnital rate: Paid, £lB 13s 2d; outstanding, £72 Is 4d. OVERSEER’S REPORT. Mr Jas. Ilallinan (county overseer) reported, inter alia : “No. 52 Main Highway.—Good progress has been niado witli the widening where the storm damage was dono in the Peep-

o’-Day and Kimbolton ridings. Tho cut near the Peep-o-Day Road has been completed and will bo metalled in the next period. The cut at Mr Beard’s will bo completed next week. Men aro employed on roads towards Rangiwahia oil other narrow places along the highway. Tho contractor for the supply of maintenance metal in the Rangiwahia Riding has delivered 21 cubic yards extra metal for the highway at Pukorimu Hill. Overhanging scrub has been cut back, in the Pcep-o-Dia-y and Hautapu ridings. Culverts and drains have been attended to from Kiwilea to Cheltenham and during tho next period the grader will bo used from Kimbolton to Mangawoka bridge. No. 53 Main Highway: This is in good order. The grader will work from No. 52 Main Highway to the county boundary at Apit-i bridge in the next period. ' No. 377 Main Highway; Tho grader and truck were employed re-shaping tho surface from ltcwa to Livingstone, shifting slips, cutting off corners, and cutting drains. This highway is in good order from Livingstone to the No. 553 main highway. The grader will grade the surface from the county boundary to No. 553 main highway in the next period. No. 553 Main Highway: Tho grader will be worked on the surface in the next period. “Cheltenham Riding.—Beaconsfield Val ley Road has been graded once. Slips and surface work have been attended to by the roadman on Barrow’s Road and the Beaconsfield Valley Road. Drains have been cleaned out and general maintenance work done. Hayne’s Road is noxt to bo graded. Kiwitea Riding: Tw'enty-four of 36-inch concrete pipo culvert have been

put in on Coulter’s Line. Tho roads are in fair order. Ongo Riding: Williamson’s Road West, Cheltenham Cross Road, and Waituna Valley Road were graded once. Forty-two feet of 9-inch concrete pipe culverts have been put in on Williamson's Road West and 12ft. of 9-inch concrete pipes on Wilson’s Road. Slips have boon shifted on Parorangi Road. Waituna Riding : Shifting slips and widening tho road at breakaways on the Mangapipi Road lias engaged workmen. Slips wero shifted on Tapuao Road and on the Waituna Valley and Kiwitca-Tapuao Roads. Pakihikur’a, Waituna Valley, and KiwitcaTapuao Roads from Beaconsfield Valley Road have been graded.”
