DEAN’S NARROW WIN. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 7. In a thrilling last-minute struggle A. J. Dean managed to hold off a challenge by F. Allyno by a wheel in the 135-mile New Zealand road championship cycle race from Waimate to Christchurch this afternoon. J. H. Newlovo, who secured fastest time, rode well all the way, and toward the finish drew away from his co-markers, Af. Al. Annett and I. Sutherland, who had accompanied him, and who secured second and third fastest times respectively. C. B. Carr, who left his group at Rakaia and rode on alone also put up a sound showing. Results:— A. J. Dean, Greendale (55min), 6hr 47min 12sec., 1; F. Allyne, Christchurch (55min), 6.47.12 1-5, 2; A. M. Alexander, Christchurch (55min), 6.4.56 3; A. E. Fransden, Spreydon (40min), 6.45.12, 4; C. A. Aloran, Kaikoura (40min), 6.45.14, 5.
