HAND WICK PLATE. ROYAL CHIEF’S VICTORY. SUCCESS FOR HIGH CASTE. SYDNEY, Oot. 8. The New Zealand horse Royal Chief ■was Ill's old self again when in a brilliant finish ho won the Randwick Plato on Saturday from the heavily-backed Melbourne Cup favourite, Mosaic. There were times during the running when Royal Chief looked well beaten, but luckily Mosaic, through making all the pace, lacked a finishing effort, and thus became an easy prey for the Now Zealander, whoso narrow and thrilling win was heartily cheered. Because the race was net run in under 3.35, the prize-money, £1250, automatically reduces to half, £625, which represents the high cost of “loafing.” High Caste played with his rivals in the Clibborn Stakes, which ho won in effortless style. This fellow is regarded as t.ho outstanding colt of the meeting. Results : CANONBURY STAKES, of £7OO. For two-ycar-olds who have not hitherto been placed. Five furlongs.—Victcrine, by Melfort (imp.)—Gallant Victory, 8.0 (IV. Cook) 1, The Elk, 8.5 2, Peruke, 8.5 3. A length. Time, 1.11. WAVERLEY HANDICAP, of £7OO. One mile, and three-quarters.—L’Aiglon. 9.2 (Munro) 1, Head Check, 7.5 2, Vestal, 7.11 3. Two lengths. Time, 3.3 i. CHESTER HANDICAP, of £7OO. Six: furlongs.—Caesar, 9.11 (Cook) 1, -Rod Thespian, 9.7 2, Benburgh, 7.7 3. RANDWICK PLATE, of £1250; weight-for-age. Two miles. ROYAL CHIEF, 9.6 (Barilo) 1 MOSAIC. 9.0 (Munro) 2 BRISTOL. 9.6 (Weiss) 3 Scr.: L’Aiglon. The three runners travelled at only a leisurely pace for a mile and a-quarter, with Mosaic the pacemaker from Royal Chief. The latter was joined by Bristol at the five furlongs and the tr;o turned for home practically on terms. Rcyal Chief, responding gamely ■to his jockey’s call, drew level with Mosaic in tue straight and a ding-dong battle ensued. The New Zealander won in the last few strides by a long head, with Bristol two lengths away third. Time, 3.432. The winner was cheered on returning to scale. CLIBBORN STAKES, of £700; for three-year-olds. Ono mile. HIGH CASTE, 9.3 (Bartle) ... 1 DASHING CAVALIER, 8.7 (Coutts) 2 BINNIA HERO, 8.0 (Briscoe) 3 Eight started. Jazbeau was scratched. High Caste came from fourth to take command in the straight, and' won easily by a length. Dashing Cavalier finished strongly half a length in front of Binnia Hero, with Dollar fourth. Time, 1.371. FINAL HANDICAP, of £759. Ono mile and a-quarter.—Leif, 6.12 (Podmcre) 1, Braidwood Boy, 7.9 2, Pen Name, 6.12 3. Fifteen started, including Cherry Bar. A neck each way. Time, 2.4*. RACING AT FLEMINGTON. STAKES TO BORDER LASS. < MELBOURNE, Oct. 8. Now Zealand-bred youngsters failed to show up in the four divisions of the Maribyrnong Trial, the first juvenile race of the season, at Flemingtcn cn Saturday. The imported sire Gay Lothario was credited with two wins, including the lucrative Procyon, a second with Tranquil Star, and a third with Savaterie.

The New Zealand-bred Cape Race and Glenlonan fought out an exciting finish in the hurdle raco for the former to win by a neck. Border Lass directed attention to her Oaks chance by a strong finish in the Edward Manifold Stakes, which event often proves a reliable guide to the Oaks. Zonda ran a game raco .but was oustayed by tho winner. Snow White was a fast-finishing third. Like tho winner, she is a daughter of .Gay Lothario. Manrico led all the way in the Melbourne Stakes. This was trainer Holt’s eighth win in the race. Glcntino surprised by

One mile and three furlongs.
