TIMARU TO CHRISTCHURCH.

SWANSON’S GOOD EFFORT. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 24. Riding a fine race off the lQmin. mark, D. Swnnston won the coveted double in the New Zealand road cycling classic event from Timaru to Christchurch. He crossed the line first and also gained fastest time (5.16.35). In a brilliant lap round the Addington Showgrounds, where the race finished, Swanston beat P. Bicknell (Auckland), also off lOmin., by half awheel. M. G. Annett and M. M. Annett were close up to fill third and fourthfl places. This was Swanston’s second success in the event, for "he won in 1935, when his time was three-quarters of a minute slower. The field of 58 starters for this gruelling 112-mile journey was about 20 fewer than last year’s total number of riders. Many riders found the going hard and spills were frequent. Results : , D. A. The South' Island 50-mile road cycling championship was held yesterday. * The course was to Edendale, via Rimu and Seaward Downs, and back to Invercargill along the main road. Iv. Baxter, a Southland rider, was first home. C. M. Hansen won the championship by securing the fastest time. Hansen, a Dunedin rider, was off scratch, and beat his two co-markers, I). Smart and W., Clough, bv a very narrow margin in a thrilling tussle. The competitors met a strong wind on the return journey from Edendale, and this slowed them down considerably.

The following were the first six: — K. Baxter (18-)min), 2.26.50 2-5. 1; C. Flowers (12min); 2.20.20 1-5, 2: M. Burgess (18£min), 2.26.51 1-5. 3; P. Meehan (12min), 2.23.55, 4; H.
