CHESS
WIN FOR WELLINGTON. The fourth annual chess: match between players representing Wellington City and a combined “Rest of the Province” team was held in Palmerston North on Saturday. It was a great success in every way, thanks to the organising work ot the two secretaries, Messrs it. N. Yorke (Palmerston North) and J. L. Hardy (Wellington). Extending a welcome to . the visitors, Mr Pi. Christensen, the president, expressed pleasure at the manner in which chess was thriving in Wellington’s colleges. The first round, which was played during the afternoon, gave the city a useful lead, which tliey increased at the evening session, the gross totals being City 44, •Rest of "Province 16. Extra games were played at boards 6 and 9 to balance the sides. Each side has won two of the lour matches played to date.
