SALVAGE OF LINER.

UNLOADING TO COMMENCE. TUGS LEAVING WANGANUI. Per Press Association. WANGANUI, July 30. The stranded liner Port Bowen was pounded by heavy seas throughout the week-end, but the vessel’s hull was not damaged. The sand has built up between the beach and the boat, and at low water it is possible to climb aboard the lifeboat tied to the vessel’s side without getting wet above the knees. 'file rough weather has prevented the taking of soundings in tlie vicinity of the Port Bowen, and it appears now that, there is little likelihood of refloating the vessel during the period of the spring tides at the end of the month as it will be impossible to lighten the ship in time. This view is supported by the announcement that the, tugs from Wellington and Lyttelton are returning to their home ports until required again. A large quantity of heavy salvage gear has arrived, and when the ship has been made secure in her present position unloading operations will commence.
