END OF SEASON.

HUNT CLUB RACES. MANAWATU MEETING r FLYING ACHE'S SUHHUSE. (Ity "Spectator.") Features of the Manawatu Hunt Club's race meeting at Awapuni on I Saturday when the 1938-39 season concluded, were the big dividends paid by the Awapuni-trained Patahi, who narrowly won the maiden race, and by Flying Acre, who won the Open Handicap decisively. Assisted by. a 71b allowance and carrying the minimum weight, Flying Acre successfully made the grade in open company to heat a good field after running to the front at the distance. Toper, who recently finished second to Jewelled Girdle at Trenthani, just heat the favourite, Hunting Lore, in a hard finish to the hurdles. The Bracelet was won by Laean, who has lately developed into a good horse. Lady Callaghan was in one of her more reliable moods and, well ridden, cut down the leaders quickly at the ; finish for an easy win in the Manawatu Hunt Cup Steeplechase. It was reported by the stipendiary steward (Mr Jf. Sandilands) that E. Dcslandes, tho rider of Royal Toast, was admonished by the judicial committee for • going over on Glenvane a little after jumping the last fence in the steeplechase. „ Aurora's Star, who bad been sold by her trainer, J. J. Waller, on the previous day to Mr R. A. Mercer, the owner of Aurora's Love, won tho Hack Cup by a neck, but she was going away slightly from the outsider, Hunting Moments, who finished second, at tho finish. Hunting Moments paid a double-figure dividend. Aurora's Star had not had a race since the Wanganui meeting, but won over a distance at the Foxton meeting held at Awapuni, and should lie a good mare in tho coming season. Screen Star, who was a winner at Dannevirke, and whose form has since been very consistent, won the hack , sprint. j Under the direction of tho president, Mr S. T. O'Rourke, the hunt secretary I (Mr H. VV. Muilancy) and the race .secretary (Miss M. Buchanan), the I meeting was a great success, and should i place the club in a good position financially. The totalisator bandied I £15,833, compared with £9120 Ids for I tlio corresponding fixture last year, an " increase of £0707 10s, or about 70 per cent. The going was heavy, but the weather held well, though it was verycold, and there was a good crowd prei sent. Descriptions of events additional to I those which appeared in the-first edition of the "Evening Standard" on Saturday are : FLYING ACRE CONSISTENT. Flying Acre, who had been racing ' consistently this term and was second in hack class at the Foxton meeting, brought off a. big surprise in winning the Open Handicap. It was an auspicious debut in open company by the Acre gelding, who was assisted by j a 71b allowance for his young Levin: rider. Handily placed throughout, ho finished very strongly up the straight and the issue was not in doubt when he hit the front a furlong from home. Gay Choti, having his first start since Easter, ran a fine race for second. Liane was a good third and Tidewaiter, who was in the rear until tho straight, finished on strongly with a characteristically fast run, which carried him into fourth place. Ncx* came Lucullus Hoy. Lady Montana and the favourite, El Moynell. Old Surrey and El Mevncll had every chance, being well placed entering the straight behind Dorado, 'who was then making heavy weather of it. Winsome Lu was also there j with Lucullus Roy. but the whole bunch were badly beaten in the run home, when Flying Acre took charge. LADY CALLAGHAN AYINS. Lady Callaghan, who was kept in tho rear until the concluding stages, and then started to move up at the turn for home, cleared right out from the opposition at the finish of the Manawatu Hunt Cup Steeplechase to win easily by five lengths. Glenvane, who was prominent! throughout, and whose rider saved a lot of ground, finished on just too strongly to take seeond place by half a length from the pacemaker. Royal Toast, who led all the way until tackled by Lady Callaghan just before making the run for home. Petrarch fell the seeond time round, and Glenvane charged the third fence from home, where he clipped heavily but recovered quickly. Royal King was always going well, but failed to come on after losing ground when he made a faulty jump at the second tence from home. FAVOURITE'S HACK CUP. Aurora's Star, after being first out of the barrier with Laughing Chief, , dropped into a handy position behind the pacemakers and then went to the front at the distance to stage a desperate finish with the little fancied Hunting Moments as they drew well clear of the others in tho run to the post. Aurora's Star got the verdict by a neck. Yed Prior and Warehi were the early leaders, and they turned into the straight from Hunting Moments, who '. was always well up, Mothor-in-Law • made a strong bid round the bend, but ' ran a little wide, carrying the favour- ' ite, Aurora's Star, with her. However, ' Aurora's Star straightened up quickly j to get to Hunting Moments and just i have the edge on tho outsider in the run to the judge. Little Robin was four lengths hack third. SCREEN STAR SCORES. Jumping out smartly, Screen Star was always near the front of tho field in the hack sprint. He came away nicely when asked for an effort at the distance, and bung on to beat off a strong challenge by To Ore, who is a fast improving horse, by half a length. AYee Lap did not get away from the barrier on terms with the rest of the field. Reasonable and Shining Hours were showing out in the early running, but Screen Star was handy just behind them entering the straight to put in his run. To Ore came from well hack to challenge him. Shining Hours looked likely to win at one stage, but weakened into third place, while Liberal's Mint, who felt his weight, was a good fourth after being prominent throughout. Raeburn raced well considering it was his first for nearly a year. Hagen was never in the picture. RACING IN DETAIL.
