EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” JULY 29, 1909.
A possible explanation of the mysterious lights seen in various parts of the Dominion and thought to be those of airships was given in the statement of an Auckland dealer in fireworks that lie' had recently sold a number of fire balloons. It was stated that the newly-formed Labour Party should meet with success in politics because of the unpopularity of the Liberal Government. An indication of the Anglo-Ja.panese friendship was the fact that arrangements were being made by these two countries to hold jointly an exhibition at Shepherd’s Bush (London) in 1910. An Anti-Asian League was functioning in Palmerston North, the president being Mr H. F. McLean and the secretary-treasurer Mr A. A. Pratt.
A Maori Rugby football team touring Australia met New South W ales at Sydney, before a crowd of 4000, and heat their opponents by 14 points to 11. The sale of obsolete rifles hv people in Australia to the hill tribes of India was causing concern.
