The Davis Cup candidates are threatening to strike over the 1989 championship tennis hall, and every ranking player competing at Seabright. with the exception of F. A. Barker, to-day signed a petition to the United States Lawn Tennis Association asking that the hall lie changed for one with a lighter nap.
Otherwise, they declared, they would refuse to compote in the Eastern championships at Bye. AUSTRALIANS LOSE DOUBLES. NEW YORK, July 27. It is expected that the Cuba v. Australia match will be played at Montreal. _ Mr Hopinan is negotiating with the United States Lawn Tennis Association regarding the matter. At the Seabright tourney Grant heat Kramer, 6—l. 7—5; Parker heat Sabin, 6—4, 7—5 (both entered the semi-finals); McNeill beat Doeg, 6—3, 13—11; Hunt beat Guernsey, 7—5, 7—5.
In the doubles. G. Mullov and J. H. Doeg lieat the Australians, J. H. Crawford and A. K. Quist, 3 —6, 9 —7, G—4.
It was a disappointing match, in which intermittent rain made the courts slippery despite the spikes worn. Crawford taking a had fall in the third set.
The Australians, after winning the first set at will and holding the score 7—7 in the second, ran into !>n.d luck. Crawford lost his service when lie netted two volleys in the fifteenth game, giving the Americans the advantage. Other doubles teams winning the day’s matches were Cooke and Riggs, Parker and McNeill, and Sabin and Mako. Tn the mixed doubles, Peacock mid Miss Canning beat Crawford and Mrs Rice-Johnson, G —3, 6—4.

Beady (California). G —2, 6 —3. and H. Hopman (Australia) beat T. Chambers (Minnesota). o—4, 6—2. In the men’s doubles Bromwich and Ilopman beat Davis and Davis (Oregon), G —o, 6 —2. and in the mixed doubles Bromwich and Alias Eleanor Young (Vancouver) beat J. Amonetfc and Alias Shirlev Catton (California), 6—3, G—2.
