The opportunity for development and self improvement through membership in the W.D.F.U. is being availed of by incicaeing numbers in their district, each month showing rapid increases at the roll call. On Tuesday Airs W. J. Davis presided over a good attendance, despite the wintry conditions. A bright lire glowed on the hearth, while a friendly welcome was extended by .Mrs Davis, who asked members to stand in silence out of respect for their late fellow member, 51 rs J. O’Connor (Glen Oroua). Apologies were received from Mesdames 'J'. Scott, G. Burgess, Gledhill, Alorcom, _ Angus, W. Hill, 11. Scott, Boyce, Armitiige and Aliss B. Hansom. The following new members were received: AJcsdaiiics Edmond, Wellborn, Russell, Jlall. K It owe, A. l’edley. Fleming. Upton, slisses A. limit, S. Hunt, 51. I’earson, 51. Powell, J. Gloyn, 11. Rowe, A. Fraser, K. .Maxwell, 51. Fraser, P. Hunt, and 51. Slattery. An invitation was received from the lialcombe branch to attend a drama evening in August. Nominations were called lor six members to attend the provincial meeting in Marton next month. The following were elected: Mesdames Dill, Wheeler, Davison. Davis. .McKay, and Miss X. Davis. slrs Wheeler gave a report of the conference held in Wellington. The committee reported that two housekeepers are engaged by. liie branch in local homes where there is sickness. .Members were keenly interested in a hook entitled "Brave Days” which has been compiled by .Mrs liarrer, Aliss. Spurd'e. and Mrs K* Wilson, and contains a record of the names, etc., ot the pioneer women of New /.calami, and includes mention of historic families- who settled in the Rangitikei and Manavutu counties. .Mrs Davis had a. copy on display. Rowe gave a demonstration on haemorrhage of the bead. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames AleKav, I'o.x, Collins, Fried rich, Hill and Ransom. The weekly class for the study of nursing was held on Thursday afternoon, with an attendance of thirty-one students. slrs Scott welcomed Dr Plaths-Alills (l'oxton), who is to act as lecturer, ’those who attended expressed pleasure at: the warm conditions, and facilities in the hall. the arrangements being made b,v the AY.D.F.U.

A local farmer is seeking, to minimise the loss of pedigree lambs in this inclement weather by providing them with canvas covers from birib. lie is confident that tin: experiment will prove suceesslul. The Rongotoa Combined Choirs paid a visit to Awahuri on Thursday evening, to render the sacred cantata. ‘‘Under the Palms.” The choir consisted of thirty members under the baton of Rev. J. W. slartin.

There was an excellent attendance at the annual concert of the Rongotoa Girl Guide Company. The first half was rendered by the Guides, the whole company opening wiih “Be a Good Scoot” and "It’s a Grand Old World.” Alaiila Rnxford recited "Domestic Asides.” The senior Guides performed an unusual ribbon dance. Jean and Joan Gennills pleased with stool guitar ducts, and the junior Guides sang "The Girl in the Alice Blue Gown,” the solo being sung by Valda Hogg and Helen Parker, with Dcleie Zajonskowski making a dainty old-world lady. An amusing playotic was well acted by Phyllis Hill, Lorna Ficldliousc, Rav Knox. Kda Hunt and 1,, and J. Churchill. ‘•Kittle Drummer Boy” proved popular, Lorna Ficidhousa singing the solo. Pi-xio I.uxford was a very attractive “Little Drummer Boy.” A group gave a poi dance. sirs D. J!. Rowe acted as accompaniste, and at (he conclusion of their pai;t cf the programme, Lilian Churchill presented her with a token of appreciation. After the interval, Alessis A. Sundborn and Burke gave steel guitar duos. . Albs Xgaive Scott delighted with an Irish jig and tap dance. Mr Adams created enthusiasm with his lightning sketches. The To Knwau Piano Accordion Band, under the leadership of Air Luxford, tendered selections. Phyllis liill acted as announcer. The concert reflected credit on the new leader of the company, Captain Xanny Davis. The president, of the Guide Confniilt.ee, Mrs 11. V. Cavorliill, together with members of her committee, had charge of supper arrangements.
