OVERTIME RATES.
GOVERNMENT SERVANTS
WELLINGTON, July 29
“Overtime' rates of pay and teamoney are paid to Government servants in accordance -with regulations made under the authority of the Public Service Act, 1912, and the staff of the Land and Income Tax Department in the Ford Building, Wellington, are paid accordingly,” said the aeting-MBl-ister of Finance (Rt. Hon. j\l. J. Savage), in reply to a question bv Mr S. G. Holland (Opposition, Christchurch North). “In accordance with regulation, overtime is not paid daily, but in monthly periods,” Mr Savage said. “In the case in question overtime commenced on May I, 1939, the first overtime pay was computed for the period May 1 to May 20. and was paid on June 9; similarly, the-second period was computed from May 29 to June 30, and this overtime was paid on July 13. The delay between the end of the period and the time of payment was due to accounting purposes, and is not considered unreasonable. - * “When the department commenced work in the building in January of this year all floors were covered with felting and malthoid floor-covering, but there were no heating facilities in the building. 'The Government has expended a considerable sum of money in conditioning the building to render it suitable for office accommodation, and a modern and elficfent air-conditioning and heating system is in process of installation. Certain floors in the building have had the benefit of this heating system for some time, and the system will be in operation throughout the whole building within the next few days.”
