BRIDGE A HAZARD.
TUNNEL FOR NEW YORK. WASHINGTON, July IS. ! The long drawn-out argument as to j whether New York should have a bridge or a tunnel linking the Battery and Brooklyn has been ended by the Secretary of War (Mr Woodring), who forbade the proposed 80,000,000-dollar, bridge on the ground that it would constitute a hazard and block access to the sea if destroyed in war-time. Mr Woodring also commented that the two existing bridges spanning East River are potential hazards and should he replaced with tunnels when , they wear out. One New York faction bitterly opposed the bridge on the ground that it would mar the famous Lower Manhattan skyline and injure the Battery Park’s beauty. The other faction, including Mayor La Gnardia, contended that the tunnel would be too costly. j
