ARMAMENTS PROFITS.
FIGURES BELIE PROMISE. LONDON, July IS. In a speech at Folkestone to-day Viscount Samuel (Liberal leader) said that, though the Government had promised in a White Paper issued in 1936 that there would ho no extravagant profits from armament firms for the needs of the nation, the results appeared very different. He instanced Caramel, Laird’s who, in 1935 paid a dividend of 3.3 per cent. The capital of the company was later doubled end in 1938 it earned a dividend on the doubled capital of 19.7 per cent, and paid 10 per cent. The naval shipbuilders of Yarrow in 1935 paid a dividend of 10 per cent. In 1938 they earned 34.6 per cent, and paid 20 per cent. The Fairev Aviation Company in 1935 paid 5 per cent. on a capital of £500.000. Last year on a capital of £1,000,000 it paid 15 per cent.
