Air. R. H. Spencer who. wntli Airs, '-’neneer has been on a two-months holiday tour of the Dutch Fast Indies and Singapore, has returned home. Afr. V. Evans, formerly of the Wellington Technical College staff and headmaster of the Alotueka District High School for the last two and a-half vears, lias been apnointed principal of the Wailii High School. The condolences of the Palmerston North High Schools Board of Governors were passed to one of the board members, Air. O. Alonrad. in the loss of his wife, at the monthly meeting of the board last night. Members stood in silence as a mark of sympathy. A Svdney cablegram reports the death, after a short illness, of Father A. P. Farthing, formerly parish priest at Waikiwi (Southland), Auckland and Port- Chalmers, but for the past three vears chaplain of do la Salle College, near Sydney. He was 65 years of age. The death of Major Harold Temperley, Professor of Alodcrn History at Cambridge University and Alaster of Peterhouso, recalls the iact that a brother of Alajor Tcmperley was stationed in Palmerston North prior to the war in connection with the training of the Territorial Force. An imperial Army officer, then holding the same rank, lie subsequently left to take part in tho Great War in which he rendered conspicuous service. At present he is military correspondent of a London journal. Air. K. A. Henderson, president of the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce, was welcomed as a new member of the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association’s general committee at a meeting to-day. The president of the association (Air C. E. Vile) said it was fortunate in having as a committeeman one who had the experience and ability of Air Henderson. Air Henderson said the chamber would bo behind the efforts of the association in future, believing that the success of the Show redounded to the credit of the city. Tile death lias occurred in Australia of Captain YV. J. Wyilie, formerly one of the best-known ship masters in the New Zealand trade, aged 69 years. Prior to his retirement in 1935 after 45 years’ service with the company, Captain Wyilie was commodore of the Huddart-Parker Line. He joined the company in 1890 as an officer in the Tasmanian trade, and gained his first command, the Excelsior, at the age of 28. In the New Zealand service his first ship was the Elingamite, subsequently wrecked at the Three Kings. The Zcalandia, Winnnera and Riverina were later commands, and in 190 S he transferred to the Ulimaroa, remaining with her for 24 years. Captain remained in command througlithe War period. When the Ulimaroa was replaced in 1932 by the Zealandia he took over the latter vessel. Ho remained in the Zealandia when she was transferred to the Sydney-Hobart run the next year, and also served for a short period in the AVanganella, which replaced her in the intercolonial trade. “It is with great regret that I have to refer to the death of a very worthy past president of this association, Mr J. H. Perrett,” said Air C. E. Vile (president of the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association) at a meeting of the general committee of the association to-day. “He was one of Nature’s gentlemen and we all realise that he gave a lot of time, not only to this association, hut also to agricultural and pastoral pursuits • generally, in which he took a keen interest. He was one of the first members of the old Board of Agriculture and he was also widely interested in public affairs.” On the president’s motion, an expression of condolence was passed with the widow and family of the late Air Perrett. The meeting was adjourned for ten minutes as a mark of respect.
