GRAND JURIES
SAFEGUARD OF LIBERTY. OBSERVATIONS BY JUDGE. I'er Press Association. AUCKLAND, July 13. “It lias liofomo the fashion to say that Grand Juries have become obsolete and should ho abolished,” _ said His Honour Sir Hubert Ostler in his charge to the Grand Jury at the opening of the criminal sessions of the Supremo Court to-day. “That is not my opinion, which is that Grand Juries provide a valuable safeguard lor the liberty of the subject.” His Honour said there were seventeen indictments against fourteen per- ■ mis, which he understood was much below the average in Auckland. After detailing the circumstances diown by the depositions in the case of a Maori. William Peru Paki, of Kaikohe, charged with attempted murder, attempted suicide, and mandaughter, the Judge said there might he a defence of insanity, but every man was to he considered sane untd lie was proved otherwise, and the ease was one in which they would doubtless find a true bill.
