HISTORY OF COUNTY.
MANAWATU DISTRICT. RECENT ARTICLES PRAISED. Laudatory comment on the action of Mr. W. J. Crouchcr in setting out on paper his recollections of the earlier days of the Manawatu County was voiced at the monthly meeting of the Manawatu County Council yesterday. Tho subject was introduced by Cr. A. N. Morcom, who said ho had a booklet written by Mr. Croucher, who had for many years lived within the county, the articles in the booklet being those published in the “Manawatu Evening Standard” a short time ago. The booklet, Cr. Morcom thought, must be unique in New Zealand, and the articles had proved most interesting indeed. He thought it right that tho council should recognise tho booklet and Mr. Croucher’s work, with appreciation recorded in the council minutes. A letter of appreciation should be sent to Mr. Croucher and the speaker moved accordingly. Cr. D. IV. Reid seconded the motion. Most of the councillors, he said, had read the articles as they had appeared in the “Standard.” They formed a very good picture of the old days of the Manawnti’i County and showed, to the present generation, what the early settlors went through. “I am very pleased that you have brought the matter un,” said the chairman (Cr. W. E. Barber). “1 had fully intended to refer to it myself, and I think it would ho a very nice gesture from this council.” Tho motion was carried, and Cr. Morcom remarked that scores of people living in the county had passed very complimentary remarks about the articles. It was decided to secure a copy of the booklet to denosit in the council’s records, the clerk. Mr. A. K. Drew, reporting then that a copy already reposed, there.
