The importance of the roads and bridges in the Ballancc and Alungaliao valleys was stressed at the meeting of the council, following I lie reading of a letter from the Public Works Department stating that the council’s application for the provision of a preferential subsidy for the renewal of bridges in the Bullnnec, Alakamako and Mariina districts was being investigated and would be dealt with later. The chairman (Or Bisset) commented that it appeared as if the council’s application was going to receive favourable consideration. He had been under the impression that the Pahia-tua county was ill a worse position than most, others with regard to bridges, but on comparison of figures bo had found that this was not. so. Their line of argument, however, ill applying for the subsidy for bridges in the Mangaliao Abillcy was that these would he all used by main highways traffic in the event of the Gorge being blocked, and in this respect were particularly important from the point of view of defence.
